6/15/12 SHOW: WEGMANS AND CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY; THE CASE FOR AND AGAINST DEFINED BENEFIT PENSIONS

On this week’s show the Ivory Tower panelists examine Wegmans’ wrenching decision to close the Pond Street store.  How should such an esteemed company balance profits and the needs of a poor community?  Should Wegmans be concerned that its decision might contribute to a “food desert?”  Should the city involve itself in finding a successor?  Then the panelists debate whether society can afford to continue defined benefit pensions for public workers  in an era of tiny interest rates and unpredictable returns on pension investments.  Join in the conversation by posting a comment on the blog.

First of all I want to tell you that Ivory Tower is one of my favorite shows and I watch it every month when I come home to visit my mother (I live in Boston).

That being said, I was very upset w/ Prof. Rubin when he described the area as having “crack houses” and yet he didn’t do anything! Why not go to the local police station and tell them to raid those houses and shut them down? If they won’t, then go to the Chief and if that doesn’t work, go to the mayor. And if that still doesn’t work, then go on the air and call them out!

Why do we accept such a blot on our neighborhoods when everyone knows what is going on?

Not pleased. Not pleased at all.

P.S. I’d be very happy to discuss this w/ Prof. Rubin.
