2/3/12 SHOW: HOW MUCH ENGLISH DO ELECTED OFFICIALS NEED? WHEN SHOULD JOURNALISTS CONFRONT POLITICIANS OVER UNTRUTHFUL STATEMENTS?

This week is the 400th show in our series, dating back to September, 2002.  To mark the occasion this show was broadcast live, for an hour, in front of an enthusiastic studio audience.  The panelists discussed the case of the Hispanic candidate for office in Arizona who was tossed off the ballot because her English skills were weak.  Then, in light of all the half-truths and outright lies our political class foists on the public, we ask if it’s time for journalists to become much more aggressive in calling them out.  In addition, in the second half hour of the show, the studio audience asked many good questions of the panel.  Join the conversation online by posting a comment on what you heard.

The 400th airing was nothing special, just a continuation of the best show on television. During “A’s and F’s” Prof. Greene gave his “A” to the late Don Cornelius and “Soul Train”. A very good choice for his “A”, just a little disappointed in how he did it. I liken it to the commercials I detest the most, the ones where a competitor’s product is disparaged in making the case for the the promoted one. Prof. Greene seemed to put down “American Bandstand” and “The Four Seasons” while giving his “A”, quite unnecessary in making his case. On the plus side, I very much agree with his comments regarding college athletics.
