2/17/12 SHOW: TAXING UNIVERSITIES TO BAIL OUT CITIES; REPUBLICANS PAINTED INTO A CORNER WITH ROMNEY AND SANTORUM; TIME FOR A “NO TRACK” LAW?
On this week’s show the Ivory Tower panelists ask if it’s time that major universities sitting on huge endowments start paying their fair share of property taxes to help cash-starved cities survive. Providence, Rhode Island is the latest to make this request of Brown University, but it is has come up in Syracuse with SU. Why, indeed, should these universities still be viewed as non-profits and exempt from property taxes? And the same can be asked for some churches involved in political action. Then the panelists examine the sad state of the Republican Party and whether it is prepared to ride over the electoral cliff with Romney or Santorum. Will a white knight come to the rescue, or is it far too late? Finally, the panelists address whether it’s time the U.S. took the privacy rights of its citizens in the online environment more seriously be passing a “No Tracking” law.
